DALLAS FINANCIAL ADVISORS

Types of Financial Advisors

The Dallas area is home to many different types of financial advisors, each one with a specialization of their own. These specializations are of important demand in the finance industry, as certifications are issued within strict standards and monitoring, ensuring the quality and integrity of the profession.

One certification is offered by the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards. Certified financial advisors are called certified financial planners or CFPs for short. Financial advisors in Dallas earn this certification by passing a course that takes up 1 to 2 years of study, and then passing an exam ten hours long for two days. Upon passing, CFP aspirants must also earn experience in at least 3 years of work in the financial planning industry before being certified as a CFP. Recertification is also required after every two years via continuing education. Financial advisors with the CFP tag are allowed to provide services such as financial advisories, investments, taxes, estate planning, retirement, and insurance.

Chartered Financial Analysts are another kind of certified financial advisors, this time with the certification coming from the Chartered Financial Analyst Institute. Called CFAs, the title is earned by financial advisors who have completed independent study of 11 different topics including accounting, economic analysis, portfolio management, and quantitative techniques. CFA hopefuls also need to pass three exams before being certified, followed by 3 years of working in the investment industry before being given the privilege to provide advice regarding professional money management and securities analysis.

Another type of financial advisor is the chartered financial consultant. Called ChFCs for short, those yearning for the title must complete a curriculum that includes 8 grueling courses and then getting 3 years of experience in the financial services field. ChFCs provide service by giving advice for taxes, insurance, investments, retirement, and estate planning.

There are also Personal Financial Specialists in the Dallas area, providing financial advice for businesses and personal investors with their taxes, investments, retirement, and insurance. PFS financial advisors have to pass a comprehensive exam, followed by working for experience in the financial planning field for 3 years. This is in order to garner experience in the field before being certified. There is also the issue of 72 hours of continuing education for recertification, which should be accomplished every three years.

Registered Investment Advisors, or RIAs, are also abundant in Dallas. Financial analysts with this certification earn it when they or their employer have acquired a license to provide investment advice from the Securities and Exchange Commission, or SEC, or through a state securities commission.
